The vice of competing refers to striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others.

Many of my clients come to me with business-related ideas, and a big percentage of those ideas I do not encourage. The reason is because these ideas were formed in an environment where there was competition going on.

If we set ourselves a goal to achieve something just to make somebody envious, angry, or to be better than them, we are going in the wrong direction in life.

The point of life is to align ourselves with the Creator as much as we can.
The moment our intent becomes an intent of damaging or hurting somebody, we have strayed from the right path. 
We are losing time and energy which should be used for other things that would benefit us.  

We always have to strive and do our best to be of service to others, not to desire to be better than them.   

If you are aware that you have this vice, it is very important to complete it, in order to stop activating the karma of losing what is most dear to you.
The more you compete with others, the more you lose what is most precious for you (friendships, health, money, success, reputation, partner relationship, and so on).
